Are the Holidays Stressing You Out?
December is Stress Free Holiday Month. This serves as a reminder that the holiday season is one of the most stressful times of the year. This is especially true for people providing care to a loved one with a disability. This article will provide several tips with additional readings on how to lower stress around the holidays.
Set reasonable expectations for yourself and others.
We often want to ensure that the holiday season is the most wonderful time of the year for our families. This is especially true if we have children or host the family gathering. Unfortunately there may be times when it is not within a person’s ability to host the family gathering, even when they have hosted the event in the past.
Along with setting reasonable expectations, it is important to be able to say “no.”
Holiday celebrations hosted by work, clubs, volunteer organizations, and a variety of other groups are common during the holiday season. It’s okay to not attend these events or engage in other activities that place additional stress on your holiday season.
While life does happen, planning ahead can help reduce some of the stress associated with the holiday season. For example, instead of trying to do all the cooking on the day of the event, try cooking some items ahead and freezing them until the day of the event. Ask for help.
There is only so much a person can do on any given day, yet the holiday season plays additional demands on our time. Here is a great article that provides some insight on asking for help: Can you clean the gutters for me?
The holiday season is the most magical time of the year. It is a time to come together with friends and loved ones to celebrate past accomplishments and future plans. It can also be the most stressful time of the year. Over the coming weeks, remember the real reason for the season and remember the tips above as you plan your celebration.
