It never held any appeal for me. The first things that came to mind when I thought about running were the horror stories about bad knees, bad feet and toe nails lost. In the last 6 months, however, the resolution to get fit has led me down the running path.
As a city girl who never owned a bike, I never learned how to ride. I also, sadly, never learned how to swim. Before you start wondering about other physical activities, I’ll tell you that I was a book work who was more interested in the arts than playing any sport.
So here I am, in my mid 30s, trying to get in shape with no past fitness experience to cling to. My personal excuses about not being able to do it got thrown out when I saw all that my sister was able to accomplish. Now in her 40s, my big sis is in the best shape of her life, and for the first time in her life she can call herself a runner. She has been my inspiration.
I’m not quite a runner yet – but I’m getting there. I’ve started interval training and am up to being able to run for 5 minutes at a time on a treadmill. Some days are better than others, but regardless of how good a run/walk I have, I always feel great for having taken a positive step towards getting fit. I’ll see my sister next in December for the Holidays (she’s currently living in Okinawa, Japan) and I’m looking forward to being able to go for a run with her, an experience we’ve never shared.
